Local Trainer Becomes One of the Area's First Certified Spartan SGX Coaches
Spartan Group Exercise (SGX) is the world's first training program specific to obstacle course race fitness, powered by the Spartan brand.
Hampton resident Robert Gagnon became a Certified Spartan SGX Coach through the Spartan Coaching Program. Gagnon spent two days at the Spartan Coaching Certification Program in Rhode Island with sixteen hours of continuing education including classroom time and hands-on training sessions.
Spartan Group Exercise (SGX) is the world’s first training program specific to obstacle race fitness, powered by the Spartan brand. For the first time in-group training history, an individual’s true purpose and motivation is at the forefront of design for a large-scale fitness program. SGX is designed to create an exhilarating and community driven group atmosphere of fitness, nutrition, and performance that optimizes individual performance in Spartan Races (or other obstacle course races), as well as daily life.
SGX utilizes a unique, independently developed strategy of periodization that allows specific aspects of training, fitness, and nutrition to be targeted at various times throughout the year, while never sacrificing a shred of the well-rounded physical preparedness you demand each day.

SGX is about changing your mind, body, and life from the inside out. SGX prepares you for life! It is not about curling or biking; it is about pushing, pulling, jumping, running, stretching, breathing and sweating. The body weight-focused workouts are varied, novel and typically conducted in a group. Spartan SGX is a fitness program with a plan behind it – a plan designed to improve your physical performance over time. Spartan SGX builds complete athletes who can dominate a strength-based workout and run with grace and speed, ready to hurdle over, under or through physical and mental obstacles.
It is based on a 12-week program, which can be further broken down into three distinct phases designed to physically, mentally, and nutritionally prepare you for a Spartan Race (or other obstacle course races), while ensuring you maintain a high level of fitness and remain injury free all year long and preparing you for life. It is about being human again, using our bodies the way they are supposed to be used. This program is designed to work the entire body and its systems.
