Photo of the Day

Devoted fans of this series know that I love it when Photo of the Day rookies completely blow me away, especially when their first image makes a strong case for inclusion in our soon-to-post story featuring some of the top photos of the year.

It's hard to believe this image by Chris Georgia — whom our Facebook fans got a sneak peek of on Friday — was taken this week in North Hampton, mainly because it looks like it belongs as a default desktop image on a computer somewhere.

Here's what Chris had to say in the photo submission:

Photographing the rise of Orion, Jupiter, the Moon, Castor and Pollux (of the Gemini constellation) was one of the most enjoyable nights I've had out in the cold this winter.

The horizon was not looking promising for quite sometime. All that was visible was a heavy haze and Jupiter, faintly shining through. As the moon became visible over the horizon, the clouds in the upper right of the frame opened up to reveal constellation Orion. As the moon continued further into the night sky, Castor and Pollux made an appearance as well as a brighter Jupiter.

The haze and clouds added a nice texture to the sky and opened up almost as if they were shining light on Orion.
