The Londonderry School District will receive a $9,277 grant to support the creation of a STEM-focused Maker Space in the Londonderry Middle School library, according to a press statement.
Modeled after “genius hour” at Google, students commit time during the course of the school year to develop and build projects that improve the overall climate of the school. At the sixth-grade level, this grant provides seven Arduino software starter kits to help students better understand science concepts, such as laws of motion, magnetism and electricity. In the newly created STEM classroom and at the seventh-grade level, this grant provides five laptops to be shared between the two classrooms. At the eighth-grade level, students are provided with 3-D printers, allowing for the collaboration between math, science, and the creative computing and media teachers. The librarians will utilize 3-D printing to enhance the understanding of relevant math, science and creative media principles.
