Derry Man Among 30 Arrested in Heroin Sweep

The majority of those arrested in the Manchester operation are street-level drug dealers.


A Derry man was among 30 people arrested as part of a major drug sweep in Manchester this week.

Charles Bakas, 59, of 9L Phillip Road, Derry was arrested for possession with intent to distribute.

The drug sting, dubbed Operation Clean Sweep, was a collaborative effort between the Manchester Police Department, Manchester Police S.W.A.T., the Drug Enforcement Agency, the FBI, New Hampshire State Police, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, New Hampshire Probation and Parole and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department.

The operation began on Wednesday when a search warrant was executed at 421 Hevey St., 3rd floor. David Sweeney, 37, and Nicole Capodanno, 24, were both arrested on charges of possession with intent to distribute and possession of a controlled drug. As a result of the execution of the search warrant, detectives were able to locate and seize 51.3 grams of heroin, 22 Methadone tablets, 10 Lorazapam tablets and almost $5,000 in U.S. currency.

As a direct result of this investigation, detectives also located and arrested Jonathan Surette, 23, of 64 Laval St., Manchester on a possession of a controlled drug charge. He was found in possession of 7.1 grams of heroin.

At 5 a.m. Thursday, the second phase of the operation kicked into gear, with eight separate arrest teams searching multiple addresses for the 34 people wanted on warrants for various drug related charges. As of 3:30 p.m., 27 arrests had been made, three others were set to turn themselves in, and detectives are still trying to locate the remaining four individuals.

The following individuals were arrested Thursday as part of the operation:

  • Kevin Potvin, 28, of 32 Bath St., 2nd floor, Manchester
  • Samantha Azotea, 23, of 32 Bath St., 2nd floor, Manchester
  • Fritz Lemite (Lemire), 36, of 208 Lowell St., Manchester
  • Tabitha Smith, 25, of 226 Karatzas Ave., Manchester
  • Andrew Emanuel, 24, of 664 Grove St., Manchester
  • Ramon Hernandez, 40, of 478 Beech St., Manchester
  • Robert Shatney, 48, of 231 Thrornton St., 3rd floor, Manchester
  • Brenda Daoust, 46, of 246 East High St., Manchester
  • Sandra Debrito, 39, of 886 Valley St., Manchester
  • Mario Ozuna, 48, of 119 Beech Hill Drive, Manchester
  • Michelle Shuman, 41, of 163 S. Beech Street, Manchester
  • Joseph Barlow, 22, currently at Concord State Prison
  • Jessica Caron, age unknown, currently at Valley Street Jail
  • Coty Bourke, 22, of 43 Walnut Street, Manchester
  • Benjamin Hesselink, 24, of 14 Maple St., Nashua
  • Mark Sweet, 18, of 309 Goffstown Road, Manchester
  • Adam Gaw, 33, 117 Wheelock St., Manchester
  • Kevin Andre, age and address unknown          

All of the above had local and state warrants for possession with intent to distribute. Mark Sweeney (theft by deception) is the only one not arrested for possession with intent.
