Cinemagic Theaters Closing All Its Cinemas In NH, Maine, Mass.

Coronavirus and lack of new movies have led Zyacorp Entertainment, a Bedford real estate company, to end operations at its 8 cinemas.

BEDFORD, NH — Despite trying to hang on, stay in business, and reopen in the spring, Cinemagic Theaters' eight locations in three states are closing permanently.

Zyacorp Entertainment, a real estate company that owns cinemas in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts, made the announcement on Monday.

"To the thousands of 'Cinemagicians' who have joined us in providing the magic of movies on the big screen over the past two decades and the generations of moviegoers who we have served, we thank you for being part of our family," the statement said. "It has been an honor and a privilege to provide our communities with the magic of cinema."

On the theatre's website as well as press reports, the company said earlier this month it was on "intermission" but making plans to reopen in the spring.

Cinemagic has locations in Hooksett, Merrimack, and Portsmouth as well as Saco, South Portland, and Westbrook, Maine, and Salisbury and Sturbridge, Massachusetts.

It is not the only chain to close. Cineworld Group closed all its Regal Cinemas, including locations in Concord, Hooksett, and Newington, in October 2020. Many theatres across the country have been closing or stayed close during the past year due to the coronavirus pandemic. But some have cited the lack of major movies being released as another reason for not reopening. Many major movie studios — like Disney, as an example, have been bypassing theatres and releasing movies straight to streaming services.

Red River Theatres in Concord has also been closed during the pandemic but has been offering virtual cinema streaming opportunities of first-run art house films and other movies, too.

However, Chunky's, which has theatres in Manchester, Nashua, and Pelham, is open for business with COVID-19 safety protocols — including running at half capacity. Not only are the three theatres offering films, but they have also been booking comedy shows, too.

AMC In Londonderry, which has 10 screens, is open three days a week at 40 percent capacity. The company is also experimenting with private theatre rentals for $99 and up.

Cinemark, which opened its first northern New England location last year in Salem, also offers theatre rentals and movies on weekends.
