Library Summer Events: Lively Puppets, Starry Skies

The Summer Reading Challenge at the Merrimack Public Library is also in full swing.

The Merrimack Public Library submitted the following regarding its summer events, including lively puppets and starry skies:

The Summer Reading Challenge at the Merrimack Public Library is in full swing! We have almost 500 young readers logging their reading time in order to pledge a big donation to the Merrimack Friars. Is your child busy reading, but hasn’t signed up for the Challenge yet? No worries, you can register anytime, and reading logs are available on our website and in the library.

In between pages, we have lots of special events coming up that your family won’t want to miss. For younger folks, we’ll be having a visit by Lindsay and Her Puppet Pals on Tuesday, July 22, at 6:30 p.m. Lindsay’s lovingly crafted, giant hand puppets and marionettes have been entertaining child and family audiences across New England. Filled with silliness, crowd participation, and unique, memorable characters, this series of charming and positive short stories will delight the young and the young at heart. This program is sponsored by Merrimack Friends and Families.

For teens in grades 6-12, we’ll be testing survival skills at “Could You Survive?” on Thursday, July 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. Participants will find out if they’ve got the goods to prepare for and handle different types of natural (or supernatural?) disasters, with games, take-home crafts, and group activities.

Lastly, for kids, teens, AND adults, we’ll be turning our eyes to the cosmos with the New Hampshire Astronomical Society (NHAS) at Skywatch on July 23. We’ll meet at the Merrimack Middle School athletic fields at 8:45 p.m., where the NHAS team will have telescopes and other astronomical equipment set up, ready to guide you through the constellations and planets. Participants are asked to leave their flashlights at home, and their cell phones OFF before coming to the field, because any extraneous light will ruin your night vision (the NHAS team will have the proper night-vision lights to guide you). You should bring a coat, because it can get cool at night even in late July.

Most of our events require registration with an adult Merrimack Public Library card. You can sign up for these programs at the library, over the phone at 424-5021, or at our online calendar at
www.merrimacklibrary.org. Hope to see you soon at the library!
