MERRIMACK, NH — A Merrimack man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident involving a fire hydrant that was struck by a vehicle last month at the intersection of Abbey Road and Penny Lane. Nicholas Jones, 21, of Merrimack, was charged with conduct after an accident on Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Police say that Jones was driving a vehicle that struck the hydrant on July 15, causing water to leak from the hydrant.

According to police, the accident occurred around 5 p.m. on July 15. Police arrived to the area to find the fire hydrant knocked off its base and lying several feet into the woods. There were tire marks along the grassy shoulder of the road, with various vehicle parts belonging to a Mazda. The police later found the suspect vehicle parked on Abbey Road with damage that matched what police found on scene of the crash. Police drafted an arrest warrant for Jones after identifying him as the driver in the incident, according to the Merrimack police.

After Monday's arrest, Jones was released on personal recognizance bail. His arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 22 at Merrimack Circuit Court.
