MERRIMACK, NH — A Merrimack man was arraigned Monday on second-degree assault and other charges after being accused of threatening to kill two people and being involved in a standoff on Seaverns Bridge Road Saturday.

Around 4 p.m., officers were sent to the home for a report of an assault in progress. While heading to the scene, dispatch learned that the suspect, Fred Fellows, 57, "had retreated to the upper level of the home where firearms were present," according to Capt. Matthew Tarleton of the Merrimack Police Department.

Two individuals who were inside the home were able to escape and wait for police. The pair stated an argument became physical and then accused Fellows of threatening to "kill and murder" them, Tarleton said.

"Fellows then physically attacked one of the subjects and began strangling them," Tarleton alleged. "The other subject present at the time was able to pull Fellows away at which time he retreated to the upper level of the home."

Both said they "feared that Fellows was preparing to retrieve one of a number of firearms he had in the home" at which point they left and called for help.

Tarleton said the road was closed, a perimeter was setup, and police officers from Amherst and Nashua came to the scene to assist. Area residents were also evacuated.

"Phone communication was then initiated and after a short period of time, Fellows exited the home and surrendered to police," Tarleton said.

Fellows was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, two counts of criminal threatening, and criminal mischief.

Police applied for and received a search warrant. During a search of the home, police noted property damage and also seized weapons, ammunition, and archery supplies.

Fellows was processed and held on preventative detention. He was arraigned Monday and his detention was upheld and extended, Tarleton stated.

Previously, according to police, Fellows was arrested on a simple assault charge in Merrimack in November 2017.
