Cause And Origin Of Brookline 4-Alarm Fire Undetermined

BROOKLINE, NH - The investigation into a Tuesday fire that required firefighters from two states has not yet determined a cause, fire officials said on Wednesday.

The barn fire started at around 10:50 am when firefighters responded to a report of a barn fire at 9 Townsend Hill Rd.

Brookline Fire was assisted by Milford Fire investigating the cause and origin of the fire. Due to the significant damage to the barn it was a challenge finding a source of the fire, officials said. A firefighter who appeared to suffer heat related injuries at the scene was transported to a local hospital, and is expected to fully recover.

When the first units arrived Tuesday, they had heavy fire showing from a large barn attached to a residence. Brookline Fire Assistant Chief Joki immediately called for a second alarm, and then quickly requested a third alarm.

Fire crews were significantly hampered with water supply. Resources which normally would have been used for water supply became a challenge due to the drought conditions. Tanker shuttles were set up, tankers were filled at multiple locations and brought to the scene providing water supply for firefighters trying to save the residence.

Metal roofs on both the barn and residence held heat and fire inside the structures creating a challenge for firefighters. Firefighters used saws to cut pieces of the roof, and open ventilation holes.

As the spread of the fire was stopped a decision was made to bring an excavator in to knock down the barn structure. Taking the structure down allowed fire crews to ensure all "hot spots" were extinguished. A fourth alarm was requested for additional personnel to assist with overhaul and salvage.
