Milford Garden Club Hard at Work Preparing for its May 20th Plant Sale
Members have been potting hundreds of 'hearty' perennials.

MILFORD, NH - As the weather warms, and gardening season ramps up, the Milford Garden Club is preparing for its largest event of the year, its annual plant sale. The sale takes place on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Community House Lawn in Milford.
Marty Draper, a member of the club for more than 20 years, said the group has been digging and potting plants for the past two weeks, and have hundreds of plants prepared for the sale.
“It’s a wicked amount of work,” she said, “but we have enough members who roll up their sleeves to help.”

The selection, some coming from members’ own plants, include a wide variety of what Draper called hearty perennials. Herbs, lilac bushes, shrubs, and small Japanese maples are a few examples.
The Milford Garden club has over 50 active members, and depends on the annual plant sale to raise money to fund some of their other programs throughout the year, including guest speakers, tours, a children’s learning program, and a scholarship fund.

The club is also responsible for maintaining local gardens, like the ones at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on Elm street, and the Veterans Memorial Park on Union street near the oval.
An avid gardener who also belongs to the Amherst club, Draper said the activity has many benefits, including being outside, getting exercise, enjoying the blooms, and increasing property value. She said it also keeps her excited about the future.
“You look at the little green spearheads poking out of the ground, and you imagine what the daffodils will look like when they are blooming,” she said.
