NH State Police Seek Public's Help Finding Wanted Croydon Man

Douglas Smith Jr., a felon, sex offender, and career criminal, who once lived with murder victim Trish Haynes, is wanted by state troopers.

KEENE, NH — New Hampshire State Police in Troop C have released an alert Saturday asking for the public's help locating a Croydon man who is wanted on two felony domestic violence arrest warrants. Troopers are searching for Douglas C. Smith Jr., 31, of Croydon, on the warrants. He is described as 5-feet, 11-inches tall, weighs around 250 lbs., and has black hair and brown eyes.

"The public is asked to not make contact with Smith if he is observed," said Lt. Michael Kokoski of Troop C, "but rather to call law enforcement immediately."

Smith, according to the New Hampshire Department of Safety and press reports online, including Patch, has a long criminal history dating back to his teens. He has been convicted of felonious sexual assault in 2009 as well as burglary, theft, harassment, assault, violation of probation or parole and violation of protective orders, receiving stolen property, duty to inform, resisting arrest, breach of bail, and numerous driving after revocation or suspension charges between 2008 and 2018. Last year, Smith was convicted on receiving stolen property, tampering with public records-info, unsworn falsification, and commitment in default of recognizance.

Smith was also indicted on a vote fraud charge and in December 2019, was indicted on felon in possession of a weapon and reckless conduct charges after being accused of firing a gun at a motor vehicle in Warner in August 2019.

After his arrest in September on the shooting case, a number of media outlets reported that he and his wife, Ashley Smith, shared living quarters on Main Street in Grafton with Trish Haynes, a 26-year-old woman whose body was found inside of a washing machine in Grants Pond in September 2018. Haynes had just moved to the state from Florida and was last seen alive in the May 2018.

That case is still an open investigation.

After Smith was arrested, he was held on $10,000 cash bail but was later released.
