WATCH: The Art and Science of Candy Cane Making

MILFORD, NH — Doug Nelson, owner of Nelson’s Candies in nearby Wilton, comes from a family of candy makers. His grandfather and father both made candy, and Nelson continues that tradition on Main Street.

He uses the same kettles and recipe that his forefathers used to make the holiday candy canes hanging throughout the store. After Chronicle covered their holiday candy making, they are working even harder to meet their customers’ demands, candy maker Jackie Merrill said.

The process takes a team of at least six helpers as they heat, cool, color, twist and shape the canes.
