Hundreds of Hypodermic Needles Dumped in Hudson

Police and fire worked to clean up the needles, tossed along Veterans Bridge.

Hudson Police are seeking the public's help in solving the mystery of the hypodermic needle dump.

Just before 6 p.m. Nov. 18 Hudson Police were called after a pedestrian reported finding used hypodermic needles scattered along the eastbound side of Veterans Bridge between Nashua and Hudson.

Hudson Police Sgt. Michael Gosselin said police estimated there were about 500 needles and a broken plastic container.

"It was too many needles for us to handle. Normally we'll get a call for a needle and go get it and put it in a biohazard container, but there were way too many for us, so we called in the fire department," Gosselin said.

Hudson Fire Capt. Dave Morin said it appeared someone may have tossed the needles from a vehicle, perhaps trying to get them into the river.

One engine and a utility truck from the Central Fire Station responded to the scene. Firefighters with protective gear and medical gloves used brooms and shovels to clear the the needles from the bridge. The needles were placed into a safe container and taken to Saint Joseph Hospital in Nashua for disposal.

It's unknown if any needles entered the river.

"We really have no way of knowing the source of the needles, or if any ended up in the water. If the public has any information, we'd like to hear from them," Gosselin said.
