MicroSociety Academy Charter School Wins Non-Profit of the Year

The Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce recognized MicroSociety Academy Charter School (MACS) as Non-Profit of the Year for 2020-21.

This past Thursday, the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce held their annual Eminence Awards to celebrate the various accomplishments of the Nashua community. MicroSociety Academy Charter School (MACS) was chosen as a Finalist for Non-Profit of the Year along with The Front Door Agency and Family Promise of Southern New Hampshire. After being selected as a Finalist three times prior, MACS was selected as 2020-21 Non-Profit of the Year.

A tuition-free K-8 public charter, MicroSociety Academy opened its doors in 2015 and has since provided Nashua and neighboring areas with an exceptional yet unique educational experience. Operating a program called “MicroSociety,” the students have jobs, elect government officials, create laws, and even utilize an internal currency. MACS currently serves 235 students and has proven to have great academic success by consistently scoring 10-20% above the state average on annual assessments (SBAC and NH SAS) in all tested areas, including English language arts, math, and science.

Over the past year, MACS adapted their instructional model and facilities to meet the needs of all students while striving to keep the community safe. Reserve funds were allocated to update air filtration systems, acquire appropriate PPE, create a nursing annex, and hire a full-time nurse. Additionally, MACS updated school policies to ensure that every student had access to a chromebook, worked with End 68 Hours of Hunger to provide food security for families, organized clothing drives, and offered both fully remote and hybrid options for learning.

Beyond the school walls, MACS makes an effort to engage local businesses by forming community partnerships that empower both students and adults. Past community partnerships have included the Nashua Police Department, the Nashua Public Library, the Hunt Retirement Community, TD Bank, Break Free 603, and more. Furthermore, the MACS Board of Trustees represent many different industries and Nashua businesses such as Winer & Bennett LLP, Pearl Marketing, Millyard Bank, Nashua Eye Associates, and St. Joseph Hospital.

The state board has approved MACS for a 50% enrollment increase by 2024; the school was also named one of the seven model charter schools for replication in the state of New Hampshire. MACS is currently operating waiting lists for all grades. Those interested in applying can learn more about admissions procedures by visiting macsnh.org.
