Nashua School Officials to Consider $6.5M in Improvements
Nashua's Board of Education is considering millions in school improvements after being briefed Plant Operations Director Shawn Smith.
NASHUA, N.H. - Nashua's Board of Education is considering millions in school improvements after being briefed Plant Operations Director Shawn Smith. According to the Union Leader, Smith provided the school board with a list of numerous recommendations to help secure Nashua’s schools, which total $6,498,408 in improvements.
“I strongly recommend we employ an architect versed in security improvements to help in refining the scope of work and providing a detailed construction estimate,” Smith wrote in a memo to the committee, adding contingency costs and the cost of an architect are included in the overall price tag.
Some of the recommended security improvements include external and internal cameras for a total of $370,000, vestibules at a cost of $1.2 million, a lockdown pull station to lock school doors with an estimated cost of $1 million and public address systems totaling $1.3 million.

Other enhancements include $617,000 for 15 radios, $372,000 for interior card readers, $52,500 for panic buttons and $150,000 for barriers.
Other items mentioned in the list include ballistic glass for main entrances, door hardware, access control measures, cellphone repeaters/boosters, public address beacons, window labeling and interior glass film.
