NASHUA – The 10 students in the most recent Microelectronics Boot Camp at Nashua Community College graduated with job offers right before winter recess.

“The majority of students received multiple offers,” said Jon Mason, Corporate, Community, and Continuing Education Coordinator at NCC. Mason has overseen the career training program since it launched in 2016.

“This was a very unique class as the age group was very young,” he said. Six students were 19 years old and four were in their 20’s. Regardless of age, the students took turns in leadership roles as they learned each new skill, said Mason, “This class showed me age is just a number as they demonstrated a high level of maturity.”

As the 10-week session progressed, students diligently followed COVID guidelines, and were careful with their time off campus to keep their peers safe. “This has been one of the best classes by far. They worked together and helped each other out,” said Mason.

Boot camps instructor Jim Flis said he was impressed by students’ dedication, “They worked hard throughout the 10 weeks, in the midst of COVID, and were able to meet the needs of the microelectronics industry. Special mention to Vitor Barbieri for perfect attendance for the entire cohort.” Barbieri worked at Market Basket for four years before he enrolled in the boot camp. He has accepted an offer at Excelitas Technologies.

About the Boot Camp
The Microelectronics Boot Camp is an accelerated noncredit career training program focused on wire/ribbon bonding and die attach for microelectronic components in manufacturing. Developed in partnership with BAE Systems, NCC also works closely with industry partners such as Mercury Systems, API Technology, MACOM, MIT Lincoln Labs, Lockheed Martin, Monzite, and more. As a founding partner, all program graduates are guaranteed an interview with BAE Systems, and BAE remains a strong supporter of the boot camp.

After four years, the program has a 95 percent job placement rate for graduates. Boot Camp students have ranged in age from 18 to 63 and include recent high school graduates, workers from across industries seeking a career change, and military veterans. Nearly 40 percent come from assistance programs like WIOA and MY TURN, INC. The most recent class had three students from MY TURN.

Graduates have continued their education supported by their employers, with alumni returning to NCC to pursue degrees in programs such as electronic engineering technology. Alumni also support each new generation of students as lab assistants on campus, and as workplace mentors.

Microelectronics Boot Camps enroll throughout the year. Each session runs 10 weeks for 40 hours per week and costs $5,500. The next class begins January 11, 2021.
