Nashua (NH) School District
October 10, 2013

In response to many requests from media today, we want to provide accurate information regarding Charlotte Avenue Elementary School playground rules.

These rules have been in place for many years, and there have been no recent changes to the rules or the expectations of student behavior.

Since the beginning of the school year, Charlotte Avenue has experienced eight injuries, including concussions and broken bones, on the playground. Consequently, because eight is an unusually high number of injuries, we became concerned about the safety of our students and Principal Patricia Beaulieu posted a letter to the Charlotte Avenue Elementary School website on October 4, 2013.

The Charlotte Avenue school community recognizes the urgent need to improve playground safety.  Principal Beaulieu has asked staff and students to review existing playground rules for safety.  This includes an existing rule that children not kick or hit each other on the playground whether running or chasing each other.  We recognize the importance of children playing and having fun, and there are many games the children can and do play on the playground.

We will continue to monitor playground safety and evaluate existing rules, as always keeping student safety at the forefront.

Mark Conrad
Superintendent of Schools
