'Tar Sands Free' to Protest Governors, Canadian Premiers
New England governors and Eastern Canadian premiers' conference, "Partnering for an Innovation Economy," will be at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods.
The Tar Sands Free Northeast plans to protest outside the 38th conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers when the leaders gather, starting July 13, at the Mount Washington Hotel.
The coalition is opposing any plan for a pipeline through Northern New England.
The conference theme, "Partnering for an Innovation Economy," will explore ways in which "innovations in technologies, investments and effective processes grow economic opportunities in the region," according to its program.
The coalition says its counter gathering is designed to "call attention to the threat of dirty, carbon-heavy tar sands in the northeast. New England currently faces an invasion of dirty tar sands in the form of the proposed Portland-Montreal Pipeline reversal, the proposed Energy East pipeline, and other projects."
The coalition plans to gather July 13 at noon, with a news conference at 12:30 p.m., followed by a rally and street theater (including a 40-foot model pipeline)Â across from the entrance to the Mount Washington Hotel resort, on Route 302 in Bretton Woods.
