Watch NH's Josh Logan Battle it Out on 'The Voice'

You've seen Josh Logan perform locally at Fody's Tavern, Stella Blu and others. Now, root for him on "The Voice."

Local singer/songwriter Josh Logan is at a crossroad – and not just because he's made it on to Team Christina on "The Voice," arguably the most legit televised singing competition on air.

Although that helps. A lot.

But for Logan, all the national exposure, the thrill of having three out of four celebrity judges on "The Voice" fighting over him, and the encouragement of a new national fan base just reaffirms what he already knew.

Win, lose or draw on "The Voice," it's time to move on from the New Hampshire bar scene.

"I've been playing bars so long, I want to let this process nurture me and change me," Logan said during a recent phone interview with Nashua Patch.

"I'm gonna go on hiatus from the New Hampshire scene, and set higher goals for myself, whether it's opening for a national act or touring on my own. Mentally, playing the bar scene really takes a toll. I see this as a perfect leap toward where I want to be, which is taking my singing to the next level," Logan said.

Logan, 33, appeared on the premiere of this season's "The Voice," and quickly turned the chairs of Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Fourth judge CeeLo Green was the only hold out.

"It's funny – I went there for CeeLo – the way he writes, I'm a fan. And so, when he didn't turn his chair around, that was weird – although I'd prepared myself for that kind of thing. Honestly, I just wanted one – anyone – to turn around," Logan said.

"When I got three judges to turn around, I was really blown away and felt blessed with that," Logan said.

Going with Aguilera as coach was a gut reaction.

"For me, it was between Adam and Christina. I just felt a vibe off of Christina that felt true," Logan said.

Since then, he's spent quality time with all his team members – and bonded with many of the contestants from all four teams, as they prepare now for the grueling "battle rounds," which begin Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. on NBC.

"We're all friends now, we're all talking a lot, and now we have to compete against each other, so when those names came out [of who was singing against who] there was a really strange new vibe in the air. The competition became really real. All you can do is try to take a breath and focus, and when it comes time to be in front of the camera and sing your ass off, you sing your ass off, you have to be on," Logan said.

Since the life of a professional musician means you're out gigging during Prime Time TV viewing hours, Logan admits he wasn't a dedicated fan of "The Voice," but others pushed him to audition.

If he hesitated at all, it was partly because he'd already been there and done that, sort of, when he appeared as a contestant on "Rock Star: Supernova," in 2006.

"I was sitting here spinning my wheels, and felt like I was at a point where I needed to test my mettle," said Logan, who has performed extensively for more than 15 years, including all of Nashua's top music venues.

Using his connections from "Rock Star: Supernova" days, Logan reached out to the casting director from that show, who helped him schedule a private audition in New York City.

Then he waited.

"I was actually playing a gig in St. Barth's on the day of the deadline they gave me, for when they'd let me know if I made it to the blind auditions, and when the call didn't come, I figured, 'Oh well.' Then my phone vibrated and I looked at it, and that was it," Logan said.

Logan's blind audition performance was "Too Close," by Alex Clare, which, lyrically, feels a little like self-fulfilling prophecy for Logan, as he takes a giant step away from the comfort of the New Hampshire scene:

You know im not one to break promises
I dont wanna hurt you but i need to breathe
At the end of it all, youre still my best friend
But theres something inside that I need to release
Which way is right, which way is wrong,
How do i say that i need to move on
You know we're heading separate ways...

His strong vocals led Aguilera to ask Logan if he considers himself a rocker. And while he can certainly rock hard, along with the best of them, Logan's soulful style is heavily influenced by soul and R&B, which he says will come through in the battle rounds.

"They're letting me carve my own path," Logan said, referring to song selection.

Logan can't talk about what happens next for him, but said he is pretty sure he will be among the performers featured on Monday night's first battle round show, where contestants sing the same song together, side-by-side.

"I can't talk about how it goes, but I will say that during the battle rounds, each coach has two steals, and they can't use steals on their own team members, so with that math, by the end of the battles there will be eight people left on each team. Then, it's the knock-out rounds," Logan said, where two people from the same team sing different songs back-to-back.

Ultimately, each team will be whittled down to five before the live shows begin.

Will he be one of the last five standing on Team Xtina? Logan's lips are sealed.

"I'm feeling good about it. These contacts you make within the show are huge – a lot of them are just like me, and between all of us, we'll be visiting with each other and gigging, long after the show. It's an awesome networking experience," Logan said.
