Young Philanthropist Continues With 'Kieran's Kovers'
Kieran Hummer has started something. Can you help keep it going?

Last year we met Kieran Hummer, who with an assist from his family, launched a blanket collection and distribution outreach, called Kieran's Kovers, when he was only 6.
Today, we know that Kieran's urge to help those in need with something immediate and tangible has inspired others – he'll be among those honored Nov. 14 with a Youth Service Award at the annual Spirit of New Hampshire Volunteer Awards ceremony, recognized for his partnership with the Nashua Soup Kitchen.
His mom, Marion Hummer, said her son is just a typical 8-year-old boy – he loves playing soccer and other sports, and has recently decided to try modeling. He also is dedicated to beating last year's record of 200 blankets collected and donated.Â
The back story to this philanthropic outreach is quite simple.
It began on a family trip to New York City in 2011Â just after Christmas. Kieran was struck by the number of homeless people he saw on the streets and asked his mom if they could buy enough blankets to keep everyone warm. His mom explained that while it might be more than they could manage single-handedly, there was power in numbers.Â
She also informed her son that his own city had people in need, and that maybe they could get his school community, Bicentennial Elementary School, involved.Â
From there, the program was launched.
Last year Kieran talked to both of the local YMCA’s about placing donation boxes, which increased the number of blankets collected, which were donated to the Nashua Soup Kitchen and the associated women/family shelter.
His school also has a big donation box where they are currently wrapping up a donation drive – they are seeking blankets, gloves, hats, and new/unopened packages of tube socks for donation to the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter and, as needed, other local charitable organizations now through November 15.Â
Donations can be dropped off at the school, 296 East Dunstable Road, Nashua.
