Derry Deck Collapse Injures One; Crews Work To Stabilize
A Germantown Road deck, under construction, collapsed on Saturday; firefighters used equipment to stabilize the structure.
DERRY, NH — Derry fire and police responded to Germantown Road on Saturday for a call reporting that a deck under construction had collapsed and injured one person.
Upon arrival, a person was located on top of a collapsed deck. The patient was assessed and found to have non-life-threatening injuries. Medical treatment was initiated, the patient was removed from the debris, and take to a hospital, according to DFD Battalion Chief Shawn Haggart.
The remaining portion of the original deck was found to be unstable and cantilevering and would require shoring to prevent further collapse. Derry Engine 1, Rescue 1, and the Heavy Rescue Trailer responded to assist with shoring and stabilization. Crews were able to stabilize the structure according to Haggart.

Haggart said the Derry Fire Department has heavy rescue equipment, which was originally purchased through Homeland Security Grants and Capital Budgeting. This equipment is designed to support building collapse and trench rescues. Crews receive regular training on shoring operations, trench rescue, and many have attended FEMA Rescue Systems I & II training.
