Windham Common Man Restaurant: No More Plastic Straws

The Common Man, which runs 15 New Hampshire restaurants, said it replaced plastic straws with paper ones over environmental concerns.

WINDHAM, NH — Plastic straws are a thing of the past for Common Man restaurants across New Hampshire. The company, which runs a Windham eatery, announced this week it removed all plastic straws from its 15 restaurants and replaced them with paper ones over environmental concerns.

"We’re focused on doing the right thing on many levels," Common Man Chief Operating Officer Sean Brown said in a statement. "Some guests need straws due to dental issues or sensitivity to cold, others just prefer to use a straw with their beverage. This provides an eco-friendly way to meet those needs and preferences."

Last year, the restaurant group switched to a system providing plastic straws only to patrons who asked for them but decided to go a step further this year. The company said it made the move because the straws are slow to break down in landfills and pose threats to wildlife and the environment.

The company's straw vendor, Manchester-based Central Paper Products, provided new paper straws made by Hoffmaster.

The company also made the paper straw switch at its The Flying Monkey Movie House & Performance Center in Plymouth.
