Asbury Park Has Widespread Road Closures, Detours For Work

Asbury Park officials are warning motorists to be aware of road work in the days ahead that also will cause traffic rerouting.

ASBURY PARK, NJ - Beginning this week, authorities are advising Asbury Park residents and those who travel in the city to anticipate daily road closures between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. pm on sections of Fourth Avenue west of Memorial Drive and Sunset Avenue also west of Memorial Drive.

Expect periodic detours on Asbury Avenue west of Memorial Drive to accommodate curb work between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Road closures and detours also are likely on Main Street between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

For the reverse, expect road closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m along Main Street because the state Department of Transportation finishes pipe replacement and readies for the Main Street Road Diet implementation. The Main Street Road Diet work is expected to begin in the spring.

The DOT requires that at the Springwood Avenue and Main Street crossing, sanitary sewer replacement be done on a around the clock until the work is complete. The 75- foot long intersection work must be complete by Jan. 1 in order for the Main Street Road Diet plans to move forward.

Once complete, the sanitary sewer upgrade continues through to Memorial Drive. The Springwood Avenue rail crossing work is expected to be complete by the end of February.

Smaller sewer lines reflected on plans dating back more than a decade need to be replaced, especially in view of the pending Boston Way, Renaissance, and Interfaith Neighbors residential projects set to be constructed over the next 18 months, official explained during a recent council meeting.

Other repairs include paving along Sunset Avenue, which had not yet begun. Once complete, paving will continue along Webb Street.

New Jersey-American Water Company will pay for milling and paving work along Bridge Street between Fifth and Sunset avenues; half of Locust Drive, all of Jeffrey Street between Locust and Fifth, and half of Fifth between Bridge and Locust. The utility has been replacing storm sewers, curbs and handicapped ramps.
