Grief For Fallen Asbury Park Detective With 'Infectious Smile'

Many are grieving the sudden death of a NJ officer considered one of the most personable, well-known and admired detectives.

The Asbury Park Police Department has lost what police are saying was one of the most outgoing, personable, well-known and admired detectives they've ever known.

Detective April Bird, who had "an infectious smile and greeted everyone with her dynamic personality," died suddenly over the weekend, according to the Allenhurst Police Department and the PBA.

"Our thoughts, prayers & most sincere condolences go out to Detective Bird's family and the entire Asbury Park Police Dept," Allenhurst Chief Michael Schneider said. "April, you were taken from all of us way too soon & everyone who knew you will miss you terribly. RIP sister."

The Asbury Park Police Department said Bird died after suffering a medical episode during an investigation.

Bird belonged to the 57th class of the 1999 Monmouth County Police Academy. She was a mother, daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, friend and detective, according to the PBA.

She was also a past PBA president for her local chapter. "Her sudden passing leaves a huge loss," the New Jersey State PBA said.

Information regarding funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.
