Asbury Park Police Seek To Help Locate Stolen Bicycles
Asbury Park Police respond to a string of bike thefts by proposing registration that could lead to their return or act as a deterrent.

By Carol Williams/Patch Staff
ASBURY PARK, NJ - Because of a reported increase in stolen bicycles in the city, the police department has launched a free, voluntary, online bicycle registration campaign that will accomplish what is suggested by the title: it will allow city residents to voluntarily register their bicycles online. According to a notice on the police website, the registration process is quick, convenient and free of charge. When officers feel they have enough information, they will develop a database of all registered two- three- or four-wheelers. The database will include photos, descriptions and serial numbers of each bicycle. In the meantime, the police are encouraging owners to lock or otherwise secure the bicycles.
If the registered bicycle is taken, having it registered will help speed police in their efforts to retrieve and return it and if the bike was not reported stolen, police can still bring it back to its rightful owner before he or she notices it is gone. Registration forms are on the police website at http://www.cityofasburypark.com.
