NJ Weather: Coastal Storm, Winter Weather In NJ Forecast

Here are the latest details on a coastal storm, as well as 30-mph winds and winter weather, that are expected to hit New Jersey.

NEW JERSEY – A coastal storm is expected to impact New Jersey this week, bringing strong winds, heavy rain – some of it freezing – and even a wintry mix to the Garden State. Some snow is possible in North Jersey.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for most of the state, saying the coastal storm will begin to impact New Jersey on Friday night.

Morris and Sussex counties are expected to get a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain after 7 p.m. on Friday and early Saturday. The rest of the state is supposed to get heavy rain, and the Jersey Shore could get 30-mph winds.

The worst of the weather is expected to hit around 7 a.m. on Saturday:

The storm system will begin to make a more eastwardly jog from Friday into Saturday, bringing wet and wintry weather across the region, according to AccuWeather. Temperatures will hover in the lower to middle 30s, and any possible snow accumulations may mainly be on non-paved surfaces in North Jersey.

There could be some travel disruptions for commuters on Friday night and it could impact flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, according to Accuweather.

Rain is expected along much of the Interstate 95 corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C. Most interior areas of the Northeast will also see rain initially, but higher elevations might have some snow and/or ice, according to The Weather Channel.

Here is the forecast:

  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 46. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph.
  • Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. Calm wind.
  • Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 49. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon.
  • Friday night: A chance of rain, mainly after 10 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. East wind 6 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
  • Saturday: Rain. High near 47. East wind 10 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
  • Saturday night: Rain likely, mainly before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible
