NEW JERSEY – Forecasters have released the latest hour-by-hour details and estimates for a powerful storm that's expected to hit New Jersey on Christmas Eve and last into Christmas Day (see the hour-by-hour details below).

The National Weather Service has now issued a hazardous weather outlook, saying heavy rain and strong 70-mph winds could cause problems on local roads and highways and power outages. Some snow is possible, but not likely to stick.

Col. Pat Callahan, superintendent of State Police, said: “It is probably a good bet that people are going to wake up on Christmas with no power.”

Callahan said the wind is a "great concern," and he suggested that New Jerseyans should make sure they have generators "ready to go."

He also said the quick melting of snow could lead to flooding, and then black ice could form once the temperatures drop on Friday night.

Here is what to expect from the storm that's expected to impact the region between the afternoon of Christmas Eve and 12 noon on Christmas:

• A strong storm system will impact New Jersey late Thursday through Friday morning with several weather impacts expected.
• Expect heavy rain and warm temperatures leading to rapid snowmelt and areas of flooding, especially northwest of the suburban corridor
• Expect strong winds leading to power outages and tree damage
• Expect isolated showers and storms accompanied with gusts strong than 60 mph leading to wind damage, especially south and east of I-95

AccuWeather forecasters say the upcoming storm is predicted to unleash rain that will eat away at the existing snow cover in New England and the coastal mid-Atlantic. The rainfall can add a tremendous amount of weight to areas that were recently buried by up to 3-4 feet of snow, according to AccuWeather.

The strong southerly winds from the storm will tend to push Atlantic Ocean, bay and sound waters northward, which forecasters warned will lead to above-normal tides and the risk of coastal flooding in the Northeast during the afternoon on Christmas Eve to Christmas morning, according to AccuWeather.
