Firefighter Wades Into Nutley River To Rescue Panicked Dog

NUTLEY, NJ — They got wet. They got bit. But in the end, they saved a dog’s life, authorities say.

According to the Nutley Police Department, officers recently teamed up with local firefighters to save a pooch that got trapped under a bridge in the Third River.

The rescue unfolded when firefighters and police officers got a call about the trapped dog, which broke loose from its collar while being transported to a foster home and ran into the river.

When first responders arrived at the Chestnut Street bridge closest to Park Drive, a firefighter waded into the river and was able to reach the dog, pulling him from the water and reuniting him with his caregiver, authorities said.

In the process, two firefighters got bit on their hands and fingers. But their furry friend was up to date on his vaccines, and his caregiver was very thankful for their help, police said.
