In-Labor Day: Essex County Cop Delivers Baby In Piscataway
An off-duty Essex County sheriff's officer and mother of two put her experience as a veteran cop to work over the Labor Day weekend.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — An off-duty Essex County sheriff’s officer and mother of two put her experience as a veteran cop to work over the Labor Day weekend, helping to deliver a baby girl at a Piscataway home, authorities said.
According to the Essex County Sherriff’s Office, the heartwarming – but heart-pounding – incident began when officer Kaisha Madera, a seven-year veteran of the department, woke up to a phone call from Essex County Jail Warden Charles Green at dawn on Sunday.
Green, the uncle to Madera’s boyfriend, reached out to the officer with an urgent request: escort his in-labor daughter, Rajine, to the hospital.

Madera, who lives near Rajine in Piscataway and is close to many members of Green’s family, didn’t waste any time. She raced to the expectant mother’s home and found her on the brink of giving birth. The pregnant woman’s water had already broke; the final stages of labor had begun.
And then came the baby’s head.

Luckily, Madera – the mother of two teenagers – was no stranger to the birthing process. She grabbed a blanket and a damp cloth, then held the newborn’s head and shoulders, guiding the infant into her waiting arms. Madera cleaned the baby, wrapped her in the blanket and called 911 for an ambulance.
While they waited, the officer and the new mother rejoiced in the sound of vigorous crying… baby Koren’s way of letting the world know that she’d arrived.
“The whole experience was a bit of a shock to all three of us but everything turned out for the best,” Madera said.
According to the Essex County Sherriff’s Office, the new mother and her seven-pound, 13-ounce daughter were taken to St. Peter’s University Hospital for further observation. They were scheduled to return home Tuesday.
