Nutley, Belleville Schools See Drop in Reports of Violence, Vandalism and Substance Abuse

State report shows decrease in incidents for both school districts.

Last week, officials from the New Jersey Department of Education released the 2012-13 school year Violence, Vandalism and Substance Abuse in the Schools Report.

According to the report, Belleville had 4,680 enrolled students with 15 incidents of violence, four incidents of vandalism, three incidents with weapons, seven incidents with substances and 15 harassment, intimidation or bullying for a total of 39 incidents.

The number of reported incidents this year represents a steep drop for Belleville schools. According to NJDOE archives, Belleville schools reported 162 total incidents in 2011-2012, including 55 violent incidents.

Nutley had 4,029 enrolled students with nine incidents of violence, four incidents of vandalism, six incidents with weapons, five with substances and 39 reported incidents of harassment, intimidation or bullying for a total of 61 incidents.

This is a drop in all almost categories for Nutley from the previous year, where there were 80 total incidents, including 13 violent incidents and 55 harassment, intimidation or bullying.
