Nutley Police: Local, NJ Catalytic Converter Thefts On Rise
A catalytic converter theft was reported in Nutley. Police said the items have "high scrap value."
NUTLEY, NJ — Another catalytic converter theft has been reported in Essex County.
According to the Nutley Police Department, officers responded to a Union Avenue home on Feb. 1 after getting a report of a theft.
The victim told officers that they parked their vehicle at 3 p.m. the previous day. When they returned at 11:30 a.m., they saw their exhaust pipe was cut and their catalytic convertor was removed.

“Police warn residents that catalytic converter theft reports in Nutley and around the state have risen due to the high scrap value,” authorities said in a news release on Friday. “Anyone observed working on near or around vehicles during late night and early morning hours should be deemed suspicious and contact police to check.”
Other recent catalytic converter thefts have taken place in Essex County, including a pair of incidents in Bloomfield reported in January.
