Nutley Public Works Commissioner Scarpelli announced that the RAKES program will once again provide an alternative to seniors and those who are disabled and unable to rake their leaves.
The RAKES Program (Random Acts of Kindness Extended to Seniors) is entering its sixth year. Businesses, churches, civic groups, schools and neighborhood organizations are encouraged to form volunteer teams. Residents seeking help must be over 60 and/or be disabled, own and live in the home requiring raking assistance, and be unable to afford help.
“We are excited to once again offer this program to our seniors,” said Commissioner Scarpelli. “Last year with the help of over 100 volunteers we cleaned and bagged the leaves of over 50 senior citizens’ properties.”

Commissioner Scarpelli initiated the program when first elected in response to a suggestion during Student Activity Day.
The program will take place Friday, Nov. 29 and Saturday, November 30 and tap into Nutley’s spirit of volunteerism.

The RAKES program also offers high school students an avenue to fulfill their community service commitment for college entry.
“Our volunteers continually make a positive difference in our community,” said the first term commissioner. “It is this volunteer spirit that makes Nutley a unique and special place to live and work.”
