Wave Of Unemployment Fraud Reported In Nutley: Police
Nutley PD: One resident said someone attempted to activate 11 employees, including himself, for New Jersey unemployment benefits.
NUTLEY, NJ — A wave of unemployment-related fraud has reportedly been taking place in Nutley, police say.
On Monday, the Nutley Police Department released details about several incidents that were reported in the township earlier this month. They included:
- “The victim reported to officers that they received an New Jersey unemployment claim in the mail that they did not apply for. They are currently employed and will be getting in contact with their employer next business day to follow up on the incident.”
- “The victim reported to police that they received information from their employer located in New York, that someone filed an unemployment claim in the victim’s name using their personal information including the social security number. The employer faxed paperwork to the New York Department of Labor stating the victim did not put in the claim and is currently employed.”
- “Another resident reported that someone had attempted to activate 11 employees including him with NJ Unemployment benefits. The victim received a breakdown report from the state of New Jersey Department of Labor Unemployment Insurance Office that stated the account was activated. The victim has been in touch with the New Jersey state unemployment offices, their bank, credit card companies and their employer regarding the incident.”
- “A resident reported they received an official letter from the New Jersey Division of Unemployment Office from an old address. The letter advised of an upcoming appointment for unemployment benefits claim that they did not apply for. The victim reported the fraudulent claim to the New Jersey unemployment office and they requested a police report.”
