Bernardsville Library Summer Reading Kicks Off

Lots of activities at Bernardsville Public Library this summer. Check them out!

There are many ways you can help to "Build a Better World" this summer at Bernardsville Public Library. Kicking off the fun on Tuesday, June 27 at 7:00 pm is magician and entertainer Jim Vagias with an interactive magic show.

Children and teens can begin registering for Bernardsville Library's Summer Reading program on Monday, June 19. Registration continues throughout the summer, but those who register between June 19 and June 24 will receive an ice pop and a free book. Summer Reading Club participants will earn prizes for reading or listening to materials of their choice from books to magazines, comics and more. School assignments count! It's well known that students can move backward academically during the summer if reading and learning are not continued and reading achievement declines as well. But if students read just six books over the summer, they can maintain their current reading level, and, if they read between ten and twenty books of their own choosing, they can actually increase reading achievement.

As always, the Library will be a hub of activity during the summer months. In addition to traditional weekly story times, there will be special programs for children of all ages. Learn how to create prints using a real printing press, make a vermicomposter, learn science and laugh with the entertaining and "explosive" Sciencetellers. Families will enjoy weekly construction challenges in which they can test their skills building a better bridge, tower, paper airplane or even a sandwich or a chocolate bar. Space is limited in some of the programs, so please check the library's website, www.bernardsvillelibrary.org, for registration requirements.

The whole family can enjoy Art a la Cart with different art projects every Tuesday at 4:00 pm (July 11 to August 22) or the new Build It program that will feature different building materials weekly on Thursdays at 3:00 pm (July 6 to August 31). There's also our award-winning, hands-on story time, Reading Rumpus, on Wednesdays at 2:00 pm (July 5 to August 16) during which active children ages three to five will become part of the story with props, games and motion. Friday Fun will have different activities each week and is great for preschoolers and their caregivers at 10:30 am on Fridays (July 7 to August 25). You can also find the Library around town this summer. Look for story times at local businesses and the pool throughout the summer. Check the library website for Traveling Tales locations each week.

There will be special preteen (ages 9-11) programs on Tuesdays, July 11 and August 1 at 6:30 pm featuring snacks, games and activities. Preteens and teens are invited to attend an astronomy program on viewing the upcoming solar eclipse and a chocolate tasting program. Be sure to register in order to guarantee a space.
Bernardsville Public Library knows that summer doesn’t end until school begins which is why we continue our Summer Reading Club and offer many activities through September 1. Stop in at the Bernardsville Public Library and start "Building a Better World."
