Bernardsville Library teams up with Bedwell for a pop-up exhibition celebrating space!

The Bernardsville Public Library is partnering with Bedwell teacher Allen Thurlow and his students to host 72 Hours of Space: A Pop-up Museum, on view at the library from 4:00 PM Monday, July 17 through 2:00 PM Thursday, July 20. This limited time exhibition will display several replicas of air and space craft created by Mr. Thurlow’s Bedwell Elementary School students for the 2017 Bedwell Air & Space Museum, supplemented by a variety of demonstrations, talks, and guided and self-directed activities.
Scheduled activities for children include a paper airplane aeronautics challenge, astronaut ice cream, alka seltzer rockets, and a drone demonstration. Adults, teens, and pre-teens can enjoy a discussion about the upcoming solar eclipse presented by Paul Cirillo, Board Member of the New Jersey Astronomical Association or stargazing with John Miller, professional astronomer at the Pearl Observatory, as well as listen to recorded TED talks about space exploration and life on other worlds. Ongoing activities include astronomical craft projects, virtual reality glasses, a space-themed scavenger hunt, and a chance to perform an alien autopsy.
The library is delighted to align with Bedwell School for this unique and exciting venture. Youth services manager Tammy Shaw notes, “72 Hours of Space gives us a chance to extend the creative work of local students into a celebration of all the amazing possibilities that come with space exploration.” Library Director Alexandria Arnold added, “72 Hours of Space combines the creative talents of the library staff and our schools to provide a fun and inspirational opportunity for the entire community. We were delighted when Mr. Thurlow approached us and are already thinking about projects we can work on together in the future.”
A complete schedule of activities is available at the library, or on the library’s website at www.bernardsvillelibrary.org.
