Beyond Measure: What Counts Can't Be Counted

The Willow School screens a must-see documentary on the future of education

On October 18, The Willow School will screen “Beyond Measure: What Counts Can't Be Counted.” The documentary film by director and producer Vicki Abeles, who also produced “Race to Nowhere,” tells the story of schools across the country that are shaping new models of education. These schools are putting into practice new research that emphasizes the importance role of play, curiosity, and engagement in education, creating classroom environments that emphasize critical thinking, communication, exploration, experimentation, collaboration, and creativity.

The Willow School was founded on these principles and has been at the forefront of innovative education since it opened in 2000.

“Abele’s film asks us to reconsider how, as a nation, we define success and measure learning, and how these practices are impacting our children,” said Francisco Ayala, Willow’s Head of School. “Her message is necessary. It is important for us, as educators and parents, to think critically about how we teach and assess students to ensure we are focused on what is most important. We need to help students thrive in and outside of school.”

Willow’s hands-on, experiential, project-based approach to education aligns with the educational philosophy of many of the schools featured in “Beyond Measure.” Willow is inviting parents, educators, counselors, and anyone interested in making a change in our education system to the screening. A facilitated discussion will follow the film.

Tickets are available at tinyurl.com/twsbeyondmeasure. The $5 ticket price supports this important film and Table to Table, a community based food rescue program that Willow is partnering with for Tackling Hunger Month in October.
