"Bursts of Color" - Art by Kathleen Havens

Havens's art expresses an eclectic conception of her environment as well as her fascination with color and composition.

Bernardsville Public Library is pleased to announce its June exhibition: "Bursts of Color: Art by Kathleen Havens." Ms. Havens, a resident of Chatham Township, expresses an eclectic conception of her environment in her art as well as her fascination with color, composition, and bold delineation of her subject matter. The artist's reception will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2:00-4:00 pm.

Having grown up in Montclair, New Jersey in the 1950's and 60's, Kathleen Goehring Havens began her art training at the Montclair Art Museum and continued her studies while majoring in Occupational Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. There she learned a variety of artistic techniques and materials to use as therapeutic treatment for her patients. She took courses in art history as well. Havens continued her studies at the Samuel Fleischer Memorial Art School under the tutelage of Max Gottlieb and Philamena Delaripa in the evenings, while working full-time at a rehabilitation center in Philadelphia. Throughout her life she has continued independent study at the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts (formerly the Summit Arts Center).

Ms. Havens has extensively studied and long admired the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, Modernist, and Abstract Expressionist artistic styles. Although most of her paintings are representational, one can view the impact of these influences on her own personal style. Since 1987, she has enjoyed the artistic stimulation of painting with a group of women artists from northern New Jersey. She is a member of the Drew Art Association, New Jersey Art Association (formerly the Millburn–Short Hills Arts Center), and is a charter member of the Chatham Township Art League, now the Art League of the Chathams. Havens belonged to an art co-op and main gallery in Highbridge, NJ for four years and was also in two shows in SoHo and one in Barcelona, Spain.
