Cézanne Portraits: Museum Lecture at Bernardsville Library
A talk about the exhibition which presents a selection of portraits revealing the most personal and human aspects of Cézanne's art.

Vivian Gordon, art historian and long-time lecturer in the Education Department at The Metropolitan Museum, will present an illustrated talk at Bernardsville Public Library on Tuesday, June 12 at 7:30 pm about the exhibition of Cézanne Portraits now on view at the National Gallery in Washington DC.
Cézanne painted many portraits over the course of his long career. They were an important part of his search for an innovative modern style that would capture the sensations of what he saw and felt. He preferred to paint people he knew: himself, his family and friends, people from the Paris art world, and workers in his native Aix-en-Provence. The exhibition presents a selection of portraits that reveals the most personal and human aspects of Cézanne's art. Bringing together some 60 paintings drawn from collections around the world, Cézanne Portraits is the first exhibition devoted exclusively to this often-neglected genre of his work.
"This exhibition provides an unrivaled opportunity to reveal the extent and depth of Cézanne's achievement in portraiture," said Earl A. Powell III, director, National Gallery of Art. "The partnership between the National Gallery of Art, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris has made it possible to explore his working techniques as well as his intellectual solutions to representation in these exceptional portraits."
