Jack Nicklaus Opens Exhibit at USGA Museum

The "Golden Bear" was in attendance as the United States Golf Association opened the Jack Nicklaus Room at the USGA Museum in Bernards.

Jack Nicklaus is considered by many to be the greatest golfer in the history of the sport and at the United States Golf Museum earlier this week he achieved something else few have done.

Nicklaus, 75, often known by his nickname “The Golden Bear”, was just the fifth player to receive his own room at the USGA Museum, located at 77 Liberty Corner Road, in the Far Hills section of Bernards Township. Nicklaus was on-hand to celebrate the opening of the 1,200-square-foot room, containing numerous artifacts from his illustrious career, including his “White Fang” putter, according to the USGA.

The exhibit celebrates the life and career of Nicklaus, the only 18-time major champion, joining galleries honoring Bob Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer and Mickey Wright, the USGA said.

“We are delighted that we are able to gather friends and family at the USGA Museum to celebrate the addition of a room devoted to one of the game’s greatest players, Jack Nicklaus,” Thomas J. O’Toole Jr., USGA president, said in a release. “The Nicklaus Room offers an interactive experience that will allow future generations the opportunity to appreciate Jack’s legacy and relive many of the greatest moments in American golf history.”

Nicklaus turned professional in 1961 and won 73 PGA Tour victories and a record 18 major championships. He won four U.S. Opens, six Masters Tournaments, three British Opens and five PGA Championships, the USGA said.

Two of Nicklaus’ record 18 major championships were won in the state of New Jersey, as well. The annual U.S. Open is also hosted by the USGA, which the Golden Bear won twice at Baltusrol in Springfield, New Jersey, in 1967 and 1980.
