Taste of Tap Water to Change February Due to Pipe Maintenance

Don’t panic if your water tastes funny, it’s not just you. Starting Feb. 1, New Jersey American Water customers in Bedminster and throughout the area will experience the taste of chlorine, as the company conducts its annual pipe maintenance program. The maintenance will cause the taste of tap water to change.

The pipe maintenance will affect the taste of tap water from Feb. 1 through the end of March. Chloramines, a combination of ammonia and chlorine, will be added to the water distribution system at treatment plants in Bridgewater and Somerset to free chlorine, the company stated in a news release.

The water company stated in a release that the quality of the water will be continuously monitored to ensure it meets or surpasses federal and state drinking water standards. A complete list of affected communities in Somerset County can be found below.

Can’t stand the taste of chlorine? New Jersey American Water offers the following tips to remove the taste of chlorine.

• Fill a glass container with water and place it in the refrigerator overnight uncovered. This will allow the chlorine to dissipate and reduce the taste and smell of chlorine in the water.

• Add a lemon slice or a few drops of lemon juice to a glass of drinking water.

Bedminster, Belle Meade, Bound Brook, Branchburg, Bridegewater, Franklin, Green Brook, Hillsborough, Manville, Martinsville, Montgomery, North Plainfield, Peapak/Gladstone, Raritan, Somerville and South Bound Brook.
