Thunderstorm Blasts Brick; 5,300 Homes Without Power

The storm was packing 60 mph wind gusts and brought down trees and power lines, officials said.

BRICK, NJ — A strong thunderstorm packing wind gusts of 60 mph knocked out power to homes across Ocean County on Wednesday, authorities said.

The National Weather Service said a severe thunderstorm was seen on radar over Whiting in Manchester Township about 1:40 p.m. and was moving through the area at 15 mph. It had gusts of 60 mph recorded.

There are multiple reports of trees and wires down across the area, the weather service said.

Initial power outage reports said there were 12,500 homes in Brick without power, but that number was revised to 5,331 by 2:15 p.m.

Jersey Central Power & Light reported more than 34,000 homes in Ocean County without power as of 2:15 p.m.
