Brick Memorial Sports: Girls Soccer, Volleyball, Tennis All 3-1

BRICK, NJ — As the fall high sports seasons have gotten underway, Brick Memorial's teams have had mixed results so far.

The girls soccer, volleyball and tennis teams all are off to strong starts, going 3-1 in their first games and matches.

Its girls soccer team has a star quickly emerging: Freshman Olivia Carney has racked up eight goals already and has scored in every game so far.

Here's a look at the results from the first 10 days of the fall season:

IN GIRLS SOCCER: The Mustangs are 3-1 on the season after dominating wins over Ocean Township (5-2) and Barnegat (8-4) in the first 10 days of the season. Brick Memorial also beat Manasquan 3-2, but lost to Southern 2-1 in the teams' Shore Conference Class A South opener for the only blemish on its record.

Freshman Olivia Carney has racked up eight goals on the young season, scoring for the Mustangs in every game so far, with four in the victory over Ocean. Senior Dominique Cummings had a hat trick against Barnegat, (Carney had one goal in that game). Senior Angel Hernandez has three goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Hailey Dietz has recorded 25 saves through four games.

Brick Memorial is scheduled to take on Jackson Memorial (away, Monday), Toms River North (away, Thursday) and Howell on Saturday.

IN GIRLS TENNIS: Brick Memorial is 3-1 and had easy victories over Brick (5-0), Jackson Liberty (5-0) and Southern (4-1). The Mustangs' only loss was to Donovan Catholic, a perennially strong girls tennis team.

The first doubles team of Marla Forfar and Anjolina Martin is 4-0 so far.

The Mustangs have two matches to make up after rain washed them out last week, and are scheduled to play Toms River North on Sept. 26.

IN GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: The Mustangs are 3-1. They opened the season with a 2-1 loss to Southern Regional but have rebounded with wins over Red Bank Catholic (2-1), Central Regional (2-0) and Toms River East (2-1).

Senior Alexis McKelvey has 75 assists and 15 service points through four matches.

IN BOYS SOCCER: The Mustangs are 1-2 after the first 10 days of the season. They opened with a 1-0 win over Shore Regional on the road, then fell to Manasquan 1-0. They began Shore Conference Class A South play with a 4-0 loss to Southern Regional.

Sophomore Jack Fanning had the goal and senior Sean Aubry the assist in the victory over Shore, and senior Trevor Greene had 13 saves in the first two games. Southern Regional failed to report goalkeeper stats for that game.

Brick Memorial takes on Jackson Memorial (home, Monday) and Howell (away, Saturday) this week.

IN FIELD HOCKEY: The Mustangs have opened the season with a tough schedule and are 0-4 so far, but three of the games were closely contested.

Brick Memorial fell to Central Regional 1-0, to Jackson Memorial 2-0, and to Toms River South 1-0. Only Toms River North (a 7-0 loss) was dominant against the Mustangs.

Senior Victoria Bec has had her work cut out for her. Against Toms River North she recorded 14 saves and had 15 against Jackson Memorial. She has 37 saves so far, not including the Central Regoinal game, where Central failed to report her stats.

The Mustangs face Colts Neck (away, Monday) and Brick Township (home, Tuesday) this week.

IN GYMNASTICS: Brick Memorial is 1-1 after its first two meets. The Mustangs fell to Middletown South, 109.9-106.15, with Abbey Kenney winning the balance beam with a 9.475 and taking second on each of the other apparatuses. Kailyn Kelly tied her teammate for second on the vault with an 8.95. In a 109.55-93.15 victory over Jackson Memorial, Kenny swept the all-around, with a 9.6 on beam as her highest score. Their next meet is scheduled for Oct. 5 at Manalapan.

IN FOOTBALL: The Mustangs fell to 1-2 on the season after Freehold fought off a potential game-winning play on Saturday in Freehold. Anthony Albanese passed for 137 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown to Jeff Lavarin, but Freehold rallied from a 2-point halftime deficit for the 20-17 victory.

The Mustangs opened the season the Friday before Labor Day cruising to a 49-0 victory over Central Regional in a game played in Bayville. Senior Tyler Sindel ran for three touchdowns and David Baez scored on an 85-yard kickoff return as Brick Memorial controlled the game start to finish. Ja Billingsley ran for a 32-yard touchdown and C.J. Lavarin had a 24-yard touchdown run.

On Sept. 8, Brick Memorial fell to Brick in the annual crosstown game between the schools, 30-7, with Memorial's lone score coming on an 11-yard run by Sindel.

Brick Memorial takes on Rumson Friday at 7 p.m. at Brick Memorial.
