A motorcycle crash at the intersection of Route 70 and Herbertsville Road led up to the crash, police said.

BRICK, NJ — Two people were injured when a police vehicle rear-ended a car on Route 70 as the drivers reacted to a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Herbertsville Road, police said.

Officer Joseph Deluca and the driver of a 2006 Honda Civic both had pain "in an extremity" after the crash that happened shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, police said. The driver of the Honda Civic, who was not identified, was taken to Ocean Medical Center in Brick for treatment. An update on their injuries was not available.

Deluca, who was driving a marked Ford Explorer, and the Civic were headed east on Route 70 when the driver of the Civic saw the crash involving the motorcycle happen in front of him, police said.

As the driver of the Civic was stopping, Deluca's attention was diverted to the motorcycle rider, who was standing in the road on Route 70, police said. Deluca tried to stop, but the Explorer hit the rear bumper of the Civic, causing disabling damage to both vehicles, police said.

Sgt. William Vendrell investigated the crash and determined Deluca was at fault for the crash, police said.
