Brick Schools Shift To Virtual As Nor'easter Moves In

Thursday's Board of Education meeting will be virtual as well, the district said; snow was falling in part of Brick, but the rest had rain.

BRICK, NJ — With snow falling in part of Brick Township and a state of emergency declared in New Jersey, students and staff will have a virtual schedule on Thursday, school officials announced.

In addition, the Brick Township Board of Education meeting on Thursday will be held virtually, the district announced.

All elementary and middle school students will follow their normal Thursday schedule but with virtual instruction. Preschool and high school students will follow an all-remote schedule like their Fridays are, officials said.

Snow started to fall in Brick mid-afternoon on Wednesday, about an hour after the state of emergency declared by Gov. Phil Murphy went into effect, residents told Patch. It was sticking to grass and other colder areas but the streets were mostly wet.

Residents on the north side of Brick — in the Herbertsville and Lanes Mill areas, and near the Howell border — were seeing the flakes, while a wet mix was falling in the Princeton and Midstreams area. Those who live closer to the water and in Lake Riviera were getting rain, readers said.

"The weather forecast is not predicting a significant amount of snowfall; however it does predict high winds and coastal flooding that could make transportation/road conditions hazardous and cause potential power outages," the district notice said. "A 'virtual day' tomorrow allows us to maintain the continuity of instruction while keeping students and commuting staff members safe at home."

The notice said that if there is significant snowfall, school could be canceled altogether. It will be announced on the district website if that happens.

The Board of Education meeting will be livestreamed on the district's YouTube channel beginning at 7 p.m. Information on how members of the public can comment will be posted on the Brick schools' website before the meeting, the notice said.
