BRICK, NJ — Lidl, the German grocery store chain, is moving closer to officially opening in Brick Township.

The store, filling the former Cost Cutters at the Riverwalk at Brick (formerly the Kennedy Mall), was among 10 new stores that will be opening in New Jersey by the end of 2021 in an announcement released by the company Tuesday.

Brick Township Mayor John G. Ducey and other township officials had confirmed the plans for the store were in the works more than a year ago. But the company had been tightlipped about its plans.

The announcement of the new stores — the 10 in New Jersey are among 50 that are expected to open along the East Coast by the end of 2021 — did not give a timeframe for when the stores might open.

Ducey, on his bimonthly Facebook live show Tuesday, said town officials have been told it should open by late October or November.

Lidl operates more than 11,000 stores and is active in 32 countries, employing around 287,000 employees globally. Its U.S. headquarters is in Arlington, Virginia and has more than 100 stores in nine states.
