Brick Police Warn of Potential for Holiday Purse Snatchings

Brick Township Police are warning area shoppers that holiday shopping is often prime time for thieves to snatch purses and other valuables out of carts and carriages.

Purses and electronic valuables were reported stolen recently, in thefts that occurred while residents shopped, said Brick Sgt. Henry Drew.

One incident occurred Nov. 14 at the Route 70 Target, a second one was at Route 70 ShopRite Nov. 16, he said.

As the holiday shopping season approaches, the Brick Township Police Department would like to remind our residents to be mindful of personal security while shopping. 

On several occasions victims have had their purses and other personal electronic devices taken from their shopping carts, and baby carriages.  Some of the recent examples of these events are as follows.  On November 14, a female victim had her purse removed from her shopping cart while shopping at the Target, located at 570 Route 70.  On November 16 a female victim had her purse taken while unloading groceries at the ShopRite located at 774 Route 70.

It appears that the purse was taken by an unknown subject while the victim unloaded her shopping cart into her trunk.  No suspects have been developed at this time, and no suspicious subjects were observed prior to them occurring. 

Actions that can be taken to avoid these types of thefts can be as simple as not turning your back to your shopping cart, unlocking the doors to your vehicle as you approach, and being aware of your surroundings. 

Also be aware that people looking to take advantage of these types of situations sometimes work in pairs.  One subject may try to distract you as the other attempts to remove your belongings.
