The grocery store chain said it has joined a federal program to help distribute the vaccines to the general public when they are available.

NEW JERSEY — ShopRite has joined a federal program to provide vaccinations for COVID-19 virus vaccine when it becomes available to the general public, the company announced.

The grocery store chain joined the Pharmacy Partnership Strategy for COVID-19 Vaccination Program operated by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control, which is providing vaccines through pharmacies across the country.

The vaccinations will be available at some ShopRite pharmacies, though the specific locations have not yet been announced. ShopRite has nearly 280 stores in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland.

"We’re proud to take part in this groundbreaking public health campaign, which could significantly reduce the spread of COVID-19," said Jeffrey Mondelli, vice president in charge of the pharmacies at Wakefern Food Corp., ShopRite's parent company. "The federal program is aiming to mass immunize the population throughout the spring of 2021, and our pharmacists are up to the challenge and ready to help our communities."

ShopRite Pharmacy also is working with state and local authorities to help innoculate high-priority people, including health care workers, long-term care facility residents and front-line workers, the company said.

"We are proud to partner with the CDC and HHS to offer the vaccine to our shoppers at our participating ShopRite Pharmacy locations once it is available," Mondelli said. "By working with these federal agencies and a network of pharmacy partners, we can help rapidly expand access to COVID-19 vaccines in the neighborhoods served by our ShopRite Pharmacy stores. This is the next step in helping to revitalize our communities."
