Caldwell University’s Mark Corino Coaches 1,000th Game

CALDWELL, NJ — Make that 1,000 for Mark Corino. The Caldwell University men's basketball icon celebrated his 1,000th game as a college head coach on Saturday, leading the Cougars to a 47-40 win over USciences.

According to Caldwell University, 2018 marks Corino’s 30th season at Caldwell and 35th season as a collegiate head coach. He is the second active coach in the Division II East Region with 1,000 games coached and is among 28 active coaches in all divisions of the NCAA men's basketball to have coached 1,000 games.

Corino ranks second among the all-time college coaches in the State of New Jersey with 557 wins, Caldwell University stated.

A native of Belleville, Corino lives in Cedar Grove with his family. He began his collegiate coaching career in 1982 at Bloomfield College, where he compiled a record of 95-48 in five seasons.

His teams have also learned the value of cracking the books. According to university administrators:

“In his career, Corino has emphasized academics with his teams and it paid off last season as two of his players were named to the CACC All-Academic Team, while three players were selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honor Court. The academic accolades continued to roll in as his squad was awarded the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award for their hard work in the classroom for the fourth straight year.”

Corino wrote on Twitter that he was “blessed and thankful” for the support he’s seen over the years.

“I am very fortunate that through my 35 year collegiate coaching career I have been touched by wonderful people,” he said.
