Council, BOE Elections In The Caldwells Near Finish Line: UPDATED

Essex County gave an updated ballot count. See unofficial results for 2020 races in Caldwell, North Caldwell and West Caldwell.

CALDWELLS, NJ — Polls have closed and ballots are being counted for the general election in New Jersey, which took place mostly via mail due to the coronavirus.

In addition to national, state and county races, residents of Caldwell, North Caldwell and West Caldwell voted on candidates for their local town councils and boards of education (see the list below).

It’s not clear when certified results will be released in Essex County. Due to the pandemic, mail-in ballots postmarked on Nov. 3 were accepted by the clerk’s office until 8 p.m. on Nov. 10, the same day provisional ballots were counted. The clerk has until Nov. 20 to certify the results and remit them to state officials.

CALDWELL

Caldwell Borough Council - There are two seats on the Caldwell Borough Council available. Each term lasts for three years.

Henderson Cole and Jonathan Lace, the Democratic Party nominees, matched up against the Republicans, Leonard Cohen and Sue Ann Penna.

Here are the unofficial results as of 3:14 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • Henderson Cole - 2,176
  • Jonathan Lace - 2,141
  • Leonard Cohen - 1,846
  • Sue Ann Penna - 1,910

Caldwell-West Caldwell School Board

Caldwell and West Caldwell residents voted for a member of the Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education. Incumbent John King faced challenger Chris Elko for a three-year term.

Here are the unofficial results as of 3:14 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • John King - 3,458
  • Chris Elko - 4,951

NORTH CALDWELL

North Caldwell Borough Council – There are two terms available on the North Caldwell Borough Council. Each term lasts for three years.

Cynthia Santomauro and John Chiaia, the Republican candidates, ran against Democratic candidates Anthony Floria-Callori and Matthew Atlas.

Here are the unofficial results as of 3:14 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • John Chiaia - 2,062
  • Cynthia Santomauro - 2,055
  • Matthew Atlas - 2,150
  • Anthony Floria-Callori - 2,170

North Caldwell Board of Education – North Caldwell residents voted for two seats on the North Caldwell Board of Education. Each term lasts for three years.

Candidates included Jordan Shumofsky and Sapna Malige.

Here are the unofficial results as of 3:14 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • Jordan Shumofsky - 2,441
  • Sapna Malige - 2,310

WEST CALDWELL

West Caldwell Township Council – Two seats on the West Caldwell Township Council are available. Each term lasts for three years.

The Republican candidates, Michael Docteroff and Kathy Canale, faced Jessica Almeida and Christy Lazarow, who were endorsed as write-in candidates by the West Caldwell Democrats.

Here are the unofficial results as of 3:14 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • Michael Docteroff - 3,885
  • Kathy Canale - 3,912
  • Jessica Almeida - 2,823
  • Christy Lazarow - 2,750
