Five Caldwell U Softball Players on Watch List for Honor

Leads nation with five hopefuls for National Fastpitch Coaches Association player of the year honors

Caldwell University said that five of the players from its women’s softball team are on the watch list for the Shutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II player of the year award.

The players include seniors Kristen Knorr, of Monroeville, N.J., Alyssa Calderon, of Fontana, Calif., Megan Fryday, San Marcos, Calif., and juniors Brielle Reighn, of Runnemeade, N.J. and Caitlin McCready of Jupiter, Fla.

This represents the first year that the NFCA will select a Division II player of the year. The list includes 30 seniors,13 juniors and seven sophomores from 37 programs around the country.

Caldwell has the most nominees with five, while defending champions West Texas A&M has three.

Knorr and Reighn received NFCA all-Region first team honors last year, while Calderon, Fryday and McCready received NFCA all-Region, second team honors.

Calderon, a Dakronics All American in 2013, batted .418 with six home runs and 65 RBI’s. Fryday hit .413 with five home runs and 40 RBI’s. McCready hit .391 in the two hole, scoring 53 runs and a team leading 15 steals out of 18 attempts.

The top 25 finalists for the award will be named April 8. The top 10 on April 30 and the top three on May 13 or 14. The winner will be announced on May 26.
